This is a good, basic introduction to using umbrellas for a single-person portrait. Well done, John Ricard. But why are the shots used to illustrate the unbrellas not the same shots that were taken in the video? Why the reshoots of the illustrating photos? I'm certainly not suggestion anything underhanded here. Just wondering why the photos of the model show her wearing different clothes in the video than in the illustrating shots. |

When I make the videos if my concentration is on making a good video, I find that I am unable to produce good still photographs. It's just too much to think about at one time. For that reason in the Umbrella Video, I shot all the stills first, and then made the video. I have a beauty dish video coming up on the site soon and for this one I used a different approach. I didn't put stills on it at all. Instead, I showed the effects of the light modifier by filming the video on a Nikon D3s and using hot hot lights instead of strobes in the beauty dish. The result of this is that when you watch the video, you are seeing the same contrast and shadows that you would see if you were looking at a still image. The video is showing you exactly what a still image would show you. It is a different approach, but I believe it will work well. Thanks for watching. |
